ML for Science Research Fellows (m/f/d)
Are you excited about the possibilities machine learning and artificial intelligence can bring to science? Have you been driving your field of science towards new directions using machine learning algorithms? Join us as ML for Science Research Fellows (m/f/d; E13/E14 TV-L, 100%).
The Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning – New Perspectives for Science” at the University of Tübingen offers several research fellow positions to be filled as soon as possible. These positions are especially suited for promising researchers right after the PhD, but a PhD is mandatory to start. They are fixed-term (until 31.12.2025), with a salary according to the German public sector (E13 or E 14 TV-L).
Tübingen is a leading place for research in machine learning. With this open call for research fellows we want to foster new projects at the intersection of machine learning and other scientific disciplines. As a new postdoctoral research fellow in our Cluster of Excellence, you will have a high degree of independence and can work on your own topic, mentored by a faculty member of your choice (see https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/166443). Your project should connect machine learning with another scientific discipline (within the natural sciences, humanities or social sciences), and we expect that you find collaborators on the machine learning as well as the complementing scientific side. As examples, consider some of our existing network projects on
- modeling and understanding spatiotemporal environmental interactions
- probabilistic inference in mechanistic models
- uncovering the inner structure of medical images through generative modeling
- compositionality in minds and machines
- machine learning in education
Any other topics that connect machine learning with science are suitable as well - we definitely want to see your application!
The research fellow projects are embedded into lively and interactive environment of the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning – New Perspectives for Science” at the University of Tübingen (www.ml-in-science.uni-tuebingen.de) and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. Together, we would like to find out how machine learning can change science.
Please send the usual documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, list of publications, names of referees) together with a 1 page pitch on your planned project outlining the question you want to address, how machine learning will change the scientific discipline of your interest, and who would be potential hosts for your project. Please submit all documents as a single PDF (not exceeding 5 MB) to the Central Office of the Cluster of Excellence (ml-in-science@uni-tuebingen.de) by December 15, 2021. Questions can also be directed to the Central Office.
The University aims to increase the proportion of women in research and therefore urges suitably qualified women scientists to apply. Qualified international researchers are expressly invited to apply. Disabled persons with equal aptitude will be given preferential consideration. Staffing will be conducted by the central administration of the University of Tübingen.
